![]() ![]() People were much more temperamental about their transportation. “Some years back, when I was first out of school, I was an auto mechanic. I think people are generally in a good mood. Most people, when they come in to buy some wine for their dinner or meal, they’re typically (just) out of work and they’re looking forward to going home, even if it’s just a quiet meal or entertaining. “Just continually trying to be creative.” What is the most challenging part of this job? I think people are doing that with everything.” People are typically looking for a better price. We’re still seeing a pretty steady base of customers coming in. “It’s probably had more of an impact with the on-premises, the restaurant market. Has the economy had much of an effect on your work? I don’t see the need to really spread it out to that degree.” But I think there’s enough opportunity in places now for people to find their product. We’d certainly lose some sales to that, no question about it. I think a beverage like that has its place. Was I in favor of it? No, not particularly. On the other hand, I don’t know how much. “It would certainly cut into stores like ours, I think, to a certain extent. If voters in 2006 had passed the ballot question allowing convenience and grocery stores and gas stations to sell wine, how would it have affected your industry? … It’s not us but it gives you some idea where they’re drawing taxes from and how they’re drawing them.” I can speak of one whiskey distiller that’s paying the federal government $18 (million) to $21 million a month. We’re already taxed heavily in this business it’s not one the consumer sees. I just don’t see how it could be good for this industry at all. What are your thoughts on a higher state sales tax? ![]() I tell customers there are many of them I like for different reasons, but it’s hard to pit one against the other.” To nail down one, I don’t think it’s possible. “I’m certainly a French wine lover, and there are many. Which wine do you break out for special occasions, and why? ![]() So it’s really just having a passion, loving wine - and helping the consumer go down the right path in their choices, which is a big part of what we do.” To think of the amount of wine in the world is astounding in itself. You can really never know enough about wine. “A passion for what you do and a knowledge of product are key in this business. What does it take to succeed in this business? I had a short stint where I wasn’t involved in the business.” It turned out to be a good time because Yankee needed a wine guy. It was going to be family operated so there wasn’t a place for me. The store I worked at previous to this had been sold. “I have been in the business about 15 years. Suppliers bring samples and I give input on what we like and don’t like.” I do special orders for wines we don’t carry but could get for customers. “I consult with consumers recommending wines for them. ![]()
